Thanks to modern advancements in dentistry, patients no longer have schedule multiple visits to receive high-quality crowns. With the CEREC system, it’s possible to design, create, and place a crown in the same day. Want to learn more about this state-of-the-art technology? Here are the answers to 5 questions patients often ask about CEREC crowns.

1. What Exactly is a CEREC Crown?

A CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic) crown is made chairside at your dentist’s office instead of at a separate laboratory. Creating a CEREC crown involves the use of CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) technology, which makes use of digital impressions of your teeth to fabricate the same quality crown as a dental laboratory in your dental office.

2. What is the CEREC Process Like?

Creating a same-day CEREC crown involves the following steps:

  • Your dentist will scan your mouth using a digital scanner to capture digital impressions of your teeth.
  • The impressions will be uploaded and your dentist will digitally design your crown/restoration
  • The digital design file will be sent to the CEREC in-office milling machine.
  • This machine will mill/grind the crown out of a block of ceramic material.
  • The crown will be placed in an in-office speed kiln to harden and finalize the ceramic to its appropriate shade.
  • After making any necessary adjustments, your dentist will permanently cement the crown to your tooth and you’re done!

3. What are the Benefits of Getting a CEREC Crown?

Since CEREC crowns can be placed in a single appointment, they are extremely convenient. On top of that, there will be no need for you to wear a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent version.

Since CEREC crowns are made out of ceramic, they are very durable and can last for years. They also closely match the appearance of natural teeth, so they are strong AND esthetic.

4. Do CEREC Crowns Last Forever?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. No restoration will last forever. Even the most well-made CEREC crown will likely need to be replaced at some point. That said, you can help your crown (and all other restorations) last longer by following the right steps for maintenance. Remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and be sure to clean the area where the restoration meets your gum tissue. Don’t forget to visit your dentist two times a year so that they can confirm that your crown is still in good condition.

5. Is CEREC Technology Safe?

Having a CEREC crown placed is just as safe as getting a crown made the traditional way. The material used to create the crown is biocompatible and uses the same materials that dental labs utilize.

If there’s anything else you want to know about CEREC crowns, you should ask your dentist directly. Schedule a consultation today so that you can take the first step towards improving your smile.
