What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is an extremely sturdy covering placed over a broken, weak, worn, or otherwise structurally damaged tooth. Sometimes referred to as a ‘cap’, a crown is like a synthetic enamel shell shaped like your tooth! Crowns can be used in a variety of situations, such as when a tooth has a large cavity, has undergone root canal therapy, or was damaged in an accident.

Crowns can be made from a number of materials, including porcelain/ceramic, porcelain fused-to-metal (PFM), gold, and zirconia. The best material for each tooth is uniquely based on location, aesthetics, and function. Our practice often favors tooth-colored materials due to their beauty, strength, and durability.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

To provide you with a dental crown, our team will first have to prepare your tooth. This typically involves the removal of some of its enamel (we use local anesthesia to make this step as comfortable as possible). Then, we will use our digital impression scanner to capture a highly accurate three-dimensional model of your tooth and the surrounding dentition.

Next, we get to work on designing and creating the crown. Traditionally, third-party labs are used to fabricate dental restorations. This can take a few weeks and requires that patients wear a temporary crown. We often do things differently. We have CEREC technology, a CAD/CAM system that allows us to fabricate high-quality ceramic crowns in a matter of hours.

Once your restoration is ready, we will verify that it lives up to our expectations before we secure it onto your prepared tooth.
